Altar or Shrine: what is the difference?
Altar
a. A visual/symbolic representation of your inner work b. Used to raise the actual state of consciousness c. A sacred space to record and ground your evolution
Differentiating between an altar and a shrine is useful because they each have a distinct purpose and benefit.
An altar is a visual and symbolic representation of your inner work.
A shrine is a visual and symbolic gateway to honor a deity.
If you want to develop a deeper connection with your higher Self, you would create an altar with items that symbolize the qualities of your divine Self.
If you desire a connection with the deity Erzulie or Shakti then you would construct a shrine with items that represent their qualities.
Because the altar is a symbolic representation of your becoming, it is continually changing to align with your actual (present) state of being or consciousness.
Whereas a shrine’s physical appearance doesn’t typically change. The deity guides you in how to construct it in a manner for them to recognize, visit and occupy that space.
Usually a deity will contact you to create a shrine in their honor so you can work together on your becoming, but the work is through a devotion to the deity.
An altar however, is a product of your own making and is driven by your own intention, purpose and vision. Your altar could be as simple as a portable pouch with a rock and a palo santo stick. Or as extravagant as a room filled with instruments, crystals and tuning forks. Whatever resonates with your spirit.
