The presence of grief in our sessions.

When I bring up grief, the first thing you may think of is the grief we experience surrounding death. But we don’t usually think of the everyday grief of being a human being. The grief that can accumulate when we feel rejected by our community, when we don’t feel seen by our family members, when we’ve been betrayed by someone we love. Or the grief of our unrealized dreams, the grief of unmet desires, the grief of operating in a way that feels untrue to who we are. Shedding tears in our sessions is appropriate for many reasons, but one of the causes is you releasing unacknowledged  grief and tension.

Sometimes the presence of grief may seem inappropriate for the events that are taking place in your life. You may be in a season of harvest. You’re feeling happy and blessed. Your dreams are coming true, the changes you’ve been working towards are finally happening and yet you feel the presence of grief. Your first instinct may be to dismiss or admonish it, but this grief is actually calling you to acknowledge and honor who you were and what you’ve gotten through to get to where you are. Once you take the steps to honor your grief, you create space to fully take in the joy and sweetness of this new season.

The presence of pent up grief can make you feel inconsolable. If you’ve  been feeling miserable despite your efforts to lift your mood you may need to put more focus towards creating space for the repressed grief to be released.
